Don't Know the First Step to Financial Health? Write Down Your Money Story

February 27, 2018

The saying is as old as it is wise: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The adage is attributed to the great Confucius and puts in perspective any major action we need to take but may feel overwhelmed by.

I remember the last time I had to move. I had been living in my apartment for about 15 years and in that time had accumulated A LOT of stuff! Furniture, clothing, books, papers, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes (yes, I still had those) and a lot more. Just thinking about it makes me tired right now. If you've ever had to move you know that if you've been anywhere more than a few years, you've probably got a lot to transport or purge.

But how do you eat of loaf of bread? One slice at a time. I started my move by discarding or donating things I didn't want to keep and then packing one box at a time. Eventually, you get moved in and start accumulating stuff at your new place!

How about when it comes to your financial life? What's sitting in the dark corners of your money closet? If you're not in the habit of regular budgeting, saving or investing, you may only think about your money when you're paying the bills. If you want to manage your money better, you may need start one thin slice at a time.

That first slice is writing down your Money Story. I recently had the joy of being interviewed by Heather Box, Founder of the Million Person Project. We had a great conversation about why giving can change your financial life and why writing your money story is an important first step to financial peace. You can watch our interview here.
